The saree is a traditional and everyday garment worn by women across Bangladesh, India, and the wider Indian subcontinent. It is one of the oldest surviving forms of clothing in the world and continues to represent heritage, identity, and elegance.
A saree is a long, unstitched piece of fabric, typically measuring 5.5 to 6.4 meters (18–21 feet) in length and 60 to 120 centimeters (2–4 feet) in width. It is worn by wrapping the fabric around the waist in pleats, with one end draped over the shoulder. This flowing end is known as the pallu.
The versatility of the saree allows it to be draped in multiple styles depending on region, climate, and cultural tradition. Traditionally, it is worn over a petticoat and paired with a fitted upper garment known as a blouse (called choli in many parts of India).
In the cultural history of Bengal, the saree holds a deeply respected position. Over time, its borders, pallus, weaving techniques, and draping styles have evolved, reflecting social change while preserving tradition.
